The Assessment of the Product

Many people compare this product with flea bombs, flea drops, and serums but that is not fare. This is an oral medicine which pets need to ingest. Capstar basically is a one-time using product to remove fleas from the skins of your pets but if pests keep on re-infesting you can increase the dose to more than once per day.

This is an eliminator and not a preventative product. After your pet ingests the product it flows inside the blood vessels and once fleas bite the pet, they become paralyzed and die out of starvation. All mature fleas die within 30 minutes.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Capstar Flea Tablets

All pesticides come with advantages and disadvantages. Listed below are the ‘good’ and ‘not so good’ factors about Capstar flea tablets.

Salient Features of Capstar Flea Tablets

Certain salient features make this product different from other flea removing products. They are:

Unusual than typical serum treatments:

These are tablets and your pet needs to intake them. Though sounding difficult, there are methods that can be applied so that pets ingest the tablets easily.

Effective once the tablet is ingested:

When your pet ingests the tablet, it liquidates and flows in the blood of the animal. It forms a poisonous layer over the blood and once fleas bite on the skins to get the blood meal, the toxin component paralyzes them, they starve to death and eventually fall from the skins of the pets.

Acts fast and results are seen in no time:

The ingredient in the tablets works fast by damaging the nervous system of fleas (and ticks) when they bite on the skin of your pet to get the blood meal. Damaging the nervous system paralyzes the insects and they starve to death. Ultimately your pet becomes free of fleas within 6 to 7 hours.

Dosage of the tablets:

It is recommended to use one tablet once a day. You can increase the dosage if the flea infestation takes a serious turn. The 11.4 mg pack contains 6 doses for cats weighing from 2 to 25 pounds (11.4 mg) and dogs weighing from 25 to 125 pounds (57 mg). It is a secured product for kittens and puppies too, provided they are at least 4 weeks old and weigh 2 pounds or more.

Criteria for Assessing the Product: Capstar Flea Tablets

When we assess a particular product we consider 5 essential criteria. They are:

The status of the company:

A Swiss pharmaceutical company called Novartis manufactures the product. Headquartered in Basel in Switzerland the Swiss company started its venture in 1996. The main functional area of the company evolves around human medicines, animal health-improving products, vaccines, and OTC (Over The Counter) drugs. The company got a green signal from the FDA (Food and Drug Administration, USA) for a cancer therapy medication, recently.

What is the active component of the product?

The major component of the product is nitenpyram, which attacks the nervous system of fleas. The component should be ingested orally and it mixes within the blood of the cats and dogs. The toxin element in it does not harm the pets but when fleas bite them for their blood meal, they die because of the nervous system breakdown.

An experiment was done in 2003, to examine how effectively a single dose of nitenpyram works on pets and it was seen that within the next 24 hours 100% of fleas were killed, within a span of 24 to 48 hours, 98% of flea infestation was reduced, 95% of flea eggs had shrunk within 72 hours.

Later on, it was realized that the reduction of flea eggs was because of the decrease in the adult flea population. Nitenpyram does not affect the flea eggs. It is better to use flea shampoo on your pets simultaneously for killing flea eggs. Sometimes the component has side effects like itching on the skin after 7 hours of application and pets tend to scratch and bites their skins.

How user-friendly is the product?

If you can manage your pet to ingest the tablet, the next part is easy. Some people, though complain that it is a heck of a job to make the pets swallow the tablet. That is why the product is not that popular as serums.

Is it safe for pets and children?

Although the active component is nitenpyram which can cause side effects like itching after 7 hours of application the product is completely safe for dogs and cats who are 4 weeks old or more and weigh 2 pounds or more. The product also comes in 2 dosages. For cats and dogs who weigh between 2 to 25 pounds, the dosage is 11.4 mg and for dogs who weigh from 25.1 pounds to 125 pounds, the dosage is 57 mg. This is a toxic product and should be kept at a distance from children.

How effectual is it?

It is a quick solution to kill adult fleas who make your pets their hosts. Within 24 hours your pet will be flea free but to get rid of flea eggs, larvae, cocoons and other adult fleas living in various corners of your house you should flea shampoos, flea sprays, and other flea products. Keep in mind that this is not the initial flea removal product. You should always consult a veterinarian regarding the typical flea problem your pet has and how Capstar may help in resolving that.
