How do Fleas Look? See Them Closely!

1) Common Flea

The commonest insect to invade in the skins of your furry friends is a flea. They are wingless parasites who live on the blood of pets. The furry epidermis of your pet allows them to hide and hang on to them. This is an enlarged picture of a common flea.

2) Cat Flea (Ctenocephalides felis)

This is a picture of a common cat flea. They predominantly choose cats as hosts. But they can affect dogs and humans too.

3) Dog Flea (Ctenocephalides felis)

A dog flea looks similar to a cat flea but they are slightly different. They transmit tapeworms and other infections to dogs and humans.

4) Size of a flea

A female flea is bigger in size than the male flea. But there are more than 2500 species of fleas and the size varies. They generally range from 1.5 mm to 3.2 mm. The females have large abdomens. Although they are very minute, they can be seen in naked eyes.

5) Flea sucking Blood

Fleas look for warm-blooded animals as hosts from whom they can suck blood. A flea’s mouth has 3 needle-like structures. 2 of them pierce in the skin of the host while the other one sucks blood from the skin. Female fleas need a complete blood meal before laying eggs.

6) Fleas on dogs

Fleas affect the furry spaces on a dog’s skin, which are mainly at the inner thighs and the belly. These places are not that exposed to light as they are covered areas.

7) Fleas infecting a cat

Here also the cat fleas attack the furry areas on a cat’s skin which are not exposed to light. Places like armpits and groin are perfect for them. Fleas are capable to kill kittens as they are weaker than adults.

8) An adult flea
