Rats have been interfering in the daily life of men for ages. Not only in regular households, but they have also been creating nuisance in workplaces, factories, godowns, commercial and public buildings, transports and where not? From the medieval ages, they have been carriers of deadly viruses that cause lethal diseases like bubonic plague, septicemic plague, pneumonic plague and more.

A horde of rats is capable to destroy an entire crop field. They are a threat to each and every part of the world we live in. People have tried a lot to eradicate them totally but have not been successful. It is impossible to get rid of them completely. That is why we must take proper care to keep them at a distance from us so that the chances of infiltration diminishes.

Rat traps are one of such ways by which rodents are kept away from your home, garage, gardens and other nearby places. On this page, you will get proper knowledge about different rat traps. But before that, you should have a sound knowledge of how to use them.

Where Should you Place the Rat Traps?

Rats are dichromats. Their sight is not that powerful as other animals. They have 2 types of light receptive cones in the retina of their eyes, the blue ultra-violet and the green. A retina of an eye has 2 types of light receptors, cones (which sense bright colour and lights) and rods (which sense dim lights or may not see colours at all).

In a nutshell, they have pretty bad eyesight. But how come they are nocturnal animals who prefer to roam around during the night time? It is because of the sense of touch by their whiskers. Whiskers (also known as vibrissae) are large mammalian hair around the nose, having natural hair follicles proficient for sensing things.

With the help of these whiskers, they stay close to nearby platforms and determine the objects they come across. The ‘nearby platforms’ include the inner walls and other immovable objects they come across or pass by. They leave black tinges (rub marks) on these platforms by secreting oil from their hairy bodies. These rub marks also help other rats to follow the trail.

The rub marks are the perfect places to place the rat traps. The only effort you have to give is to find out these rub marks in your house. Bend down, fall on to your knees and use a slender electrical torchlight to discover the marks even in the finest creeks of your home. Do an extensive search of all the nooks and corners of your house and then place the rat traps.

Rub marks and placing the traps: The things you should do and not do

Place the rat traps close to the walls where you have identified the rub marks. Placing the traps at a distance will not help. As mentioned earlier the rats identify baits not by their eyesights but with their whiskers.

The Rat’s Sense of Smell

Rats have strong olfactory abilities. Their sense of smell is comparatively higher than other animals. Rats intake air through their noses and the air reaches to parts of their skin containing olfactory neurons that are tipped with hair-like structures called cilia.

Minute particles called odorants are present at the tips of cilia which respond to the type of smell rats intake. Rats also smell through the vomeronasal organs. These are located at the small egg-shaped patches present at the lower part of their nasal passages.

Things to Keep in Mind

Use disposable latex gloves:

Since rats are acute smellers, even if the lightest smell gets transferred to the baits they will avoid it. That is why it is advisable to use disposable latex gloves while preparing a rat trap and placing a bait.

The gloves come handy too while removing the bait or the dead rat which could be infectious to humans. If any body-fluid has been excreted from the dead animal, gloves protect your skin from touching it. Some body-fluids may contain bacteria or viruses which could be infectious.

Unset the traps at the beginning:

Rats can smell other rats’ breath. By doing so they determine whether the food they have already sensed is poisonous or not. If they smell food in another rat’s breath and find the rat living and healthy, the food is determined safe. So the next time they find it, they remember the smell and know that they are going for a portion of safe food.

Spread the bait in your house without setting the traps to capture the rats for a few days. Let them enjoy the bait and smell the breath of the so-called safe food among themselves. Within a few days, they will consider the bait as a portion of safe food and will freely walk around them. Now set the traps! They will expect to be caught around the safe food. This will have immediate results.

What are the Food Habits of Rats?

Rats eat almost anything but at the same time, they are opportunistic eaters. Different types of rats prefer different food. Norway rats prefer grains, meat, fish or nuts which are rich in protein. Roof rats prefer fruits (often mentioned as fruit rats), berries, snails or slugs. Nesting near humans gives them an ample variety of choosing foodstuffs.

Numerous ‘sources of food’ like garbage bags, open containers or leftover food are easy sources of food for them in your household. They also feed on pet food, pet food bowls or even dead rodents. But generally, they keep away from foods having strong odours. Rats are intelligent rodents and they manage to steal the bait from the trap without being caught. Here are the things which you should do while laying a trap.

Using a hard food bait:

When you plan to use a hard food as bait, like a cheese cube or a cookie, use a string or a wire to tie to it so that even the rat tries to steal the food particle it will face a force which allows not to move the particle after a certain distance. The struggle between the rat and the knot tied at the trigger activates the trigger to trap the rat.

Using a soft food bait:

Instead of a hard bait if you wish to use a soft food bait like peanut butter or chocolate, rather than putting a large portion of it on the trigger, spread a lining of the soft bait on the surface of the trigger so that rats keep on licking the bait. A continuous movement on the trigger activates it and traps the rats.

Electronic Humane Rodent Zapper

Electronic Humane Rodent Zapper

  • Wireless sensors.
  • Humane and clean killing.
  • Safe for children.

Why you should choose this?

You don’t have to wear gloves to lay this trap other than placing the bait. The rodent zapper kills mice, rats, squirrels, chipmunks, and other rodents simply by electrocution (7000 volts). No toxic chemicals or poison is required for this rat trap. ABCO is basically a sports equipment brand specializing in products like knee straps, knee pillows, etc. but they had come up with a rodent removing product which is very popular.

You can use 4 D-cell batteries or an AC adapter (included in the product pack) and place the zapper at any place you wish. There is a signalling light that indicates that it is on even in the night time. Once a rat enters into the tunnel having a dimension of 3.23 inches by 3inches, a blue LED light flashes along with a beeping sound, signifying that a rat has been trapped and is dead.

All you need to do now is to turn off the power, lift the tunnel trap (11 inches x 4.5 inches x 5 inches), slant it to the trash can to dispose of the dead rat. Wipe the tunnel with a wet cloth, place a new bait and turn the power on of the zapper. The rat trap is set again. It is advisable to use the AC power cord rather than the batteries as batteries gradually lose their effectiveness in simultaneous usages. Although D-cell batteries are strong some complains have come that rodents tend to flee from the zappers after feeling initial electric vibrations caused by overused batteries.

Thumbs Up
Poisons are not needed
Easy to lay the trap, just put the power on
Safe for your fingers (Not a snap trap)
Easy usage technique
Thumbs Down
Batteries may not be effective if the power reduces

The Ratinator Multiple Catch Live Rat Trap

The Ratinator Multiple Catch Live Rat Trap

  • Multiple rodent catching device.
  • Humane trap, no toxic chemicals or poisons used.

Why you should choose this?

This rat trap can capture up to 21 rodents and yet does not kill them. You can capture them and later release them at a distance so that they don’t infest your house anymore. No poisons or toxic chemicals are used to kill rodents. This trap saves time, comparing to a single rat trap as a single rat trap needs to be emptied once the animal is killed.

Then later clean it and lay it again for another rat. No electrical input is needed and there is no scope of getting your fingers injured because this is not a snap trap. The rust-free body of the trap makes it sturdy and seeing fellow rats gathered in a small space, though trapped, encourages others to drive towards them.

Eventually, they all fall into the trap. It is advisable to cover the trap with a piece of cloth when you are going to dispose of them, otherwise, their squeaking sounds will keep on increasing due to the movement.
